Local Builder Awarded Provincial Grant for Affordable Housing
Harvest Builders, whose core business is to construct custom homes, is excited to announce "Harvest Park".
Harvest Builders, owned by local businesswoman Darla Carpenter, has been awarded a grant through the Government of Alberta for seniors residences. Housing Minister Jonathan Denis made the announcement May 20, 2010 in Edmonton. The grant being given to Harvest Builders was one of several released throughout the province. The units approved for Didsbury are slated to be built in Valarosa Crossing with construction anticipated to begin the summer of 2010.
"This particular project will have 20 apartments that are designated as rentals for seniors," said Carpenter. "I'm quite excited about getting the go-ahead for this project. We've been waiting for the results of our bid for a few months."
The complex being built by Harvest Builders is part of the provincial affordable housing program. The joint grant program between the governments of Alberta and Canada is meant to strengthen the economy, create jobs and help low to moderate income families.
"A significant amount of work has already been devoted to the proposal," commented Carpenter. "The Town of Didsbury is very supportive and we want to thank both the Town administration and Town Council for their continued participation. The province's grant program is designed to assist eligible organizations with one-time grants to address housing issues for low- to moderate-income families, individuals and seniors.
Green technology is encouraged to contribute to the long-term viability and sustainability of such housing. Promoting conservation of non-renewable resources, minimal environmental impact and building components that contribute to the economic efficiency of the facility over the long term are preferred by the province.
The 'green' concept fits well with Harvest Builders who already offer prospective home owners many options to make their homes more energy efficient. "Harvest Builders is a certified Built Green builder and we love to build these homes," added Carpenter.
In addition to Harvest Builders contribution towards affordable housing, they will be building 20 townhouses for entry level purchase. These homes will be approximately 1200 square feet, 3 bedroom units with an attached garage. The townhouses will be priced starting at $199,900. No government funding or grant money will be used towards this portion of the project.
